Smoking Pipes For Relaxation

Smoking pipes have retained their distinguished reputation while other forms of smoking have fallen to unfavorable acts.  While friends may choke at cigar smoke or hate the odor caused by cigarettes, they tend to lift their noses and deeply inhale at the smell of sweet pipe tobacco.  Even the most opposed to the addictive habit of smoking seem to be disarmed by the sweetness of smoking pipes.

Many noteworthy persons were users of smoking pipes.  Authors C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were both known to enjoy their pipes.  Artist Norman Rockwell loved his pipe to the point it was almost always included in any self portrait.  The character Sherlock Holmes might never have solved any crimes had it not been for his trusty "U" shaped pipe.

Just what is that makes smoking pipes a habit that is distinguished when other forms of tobacco smoking are disdained?  Some may point to the pipe as a leisurely activity, unlike the hurried and frantic smoking of cigarettes.  If this were true, the cigar should be just as acceptable, however the smoke creates a cloud that lowers its acceptance.  The smoking pipe offers a smell that is sweet and is a act of leisure.  Even nonsmokers often enjoy the scent created.  Individuals who enjoy the pipe, yet are novices in the field should take some time to learn about their pipe before heading out in public for a smoke.  The art of pipe smoking can easily be botched by those new to the leisurely activity.

Three skills must be mastered when using a smoking pipe.  The first is learning to pack the tobacco correctly.  A second is keeping the pipe lit and burning.  The third is curing a pipe.  Curing is the most difficult and yet one of the most important to enjoying the new pipe.  Packing is simply a matter of practice.  The tobacco must be tamped correctly for a good draw.  It is necessary to balance compacting the leaf and providing airflow.  Tamping lets the coal lower into the pipe bowl a little more with each draw the smoker makes.

It takes some devotion to cure smoking pipes.  Dedicated smokers will own several pipes and devote one to each leaf that is enjoyed.  The danger of mixing leaves in on pipe is an indistinct cure.  This flavor obtained by the bowl itself becomes deeper as time passes.  Mixing tobaccos allows false tastes and bitter flavors to arise.  When just starting smoking pipes, it is good to use a cheap pipe until the favorite tobacco leaf is found.  As the pipe is carefully maintained, the cure can begin to set and give even greater flavor to the leaf being smoked.  Avoid scratching the bowl when cleaning the pipe.

The Versatility Of Smoking Pipes

Diverse and versatile, smoking pipes are making a spectacular comeback.  If you're a new pipe smoker, there are several things to remember when choosing the right pipe for you.  First, choose your design.  A beginner to the pipe game might go for something that suits his needs or even his lifestyle. The design is important since it basically shows how the pipe would react to the tobacco.  Does it affect the taste or flavor of the tobacco? Most importantly, does the design provide a clean and clear smoke?

One thing to remember is that smoking pipes are very personal, so the manner of choosing one's pipe should suit the taste of the smoker and no one else.  Pipe smoking is also about relaxation. Hence, choose a pipe that soothes, allows you to be comfortable, and unwind at your leisure.  Do not choose a pipe that may look groovy but is too heavy.  Or something that doesn't work to make you comfortable, relaxed, or destressed. In short, a smoking pipe may look aesthetically good with your Armani suit but if it doesn't do its function as a relaxing agent then don't even think of buying it.

Smoking pipes usually come in wooden, metal, and glass designs.  Most smokers prefer the wooden designs because not only are they old fashioned and traditional they also look elegant and sophisticated. The metal and glass pipes are a bit more showy in their designs but they don't lack admirers. The same with briar pipes, which remain popular among pipe smokers.  But for the best smoking pipes, hands down meerschaum pipes remain and are still the only choice.  Meerschaum pipes are not only known for their beautiful design but also for the meerschaum stone's unique properties that considerably help enhance the smoking pipe experience.

Beginners, however, can try a few pipes before settling down for their final choice. The rule is to find something that feels right and light. In the meantime, one of the things you have to learn as a beginner is how to pack the pipe properly.  Then how to light it, which is not easy because of its different nuances. Most importantly, you have to learn how to smoke the pipe.  As in most things, smoking pipes take getting used to after you've done it over a period of time.

With different smoking pipes to choose from, it is more than easy to find that perfect pipe that suits your needs aesthetically and conveniently. Beginners in pipe smoking is also advised to find a guide who can help them choose the right pipe as well as teach them how to pack and light the device.  Once they learn the basics of smoking pipes, they can finally settle down and enjoy a good and relaxing pipe smoke at their own time and convenience.
